Looking After Number 1: How To Do It

Looking after yourself is one of the most important things in the world.

Why , you ask?

I don’t have time, you might say! I’ve got other people to look after. I’ve got deadlines at work! I’ve got a girl to keep happy. I’ve got bills to pay!

Because if you don’t look after yourself, you won’t be in a fit state to look after anything or anyone else.

With this in mind, here are a few ways that you can look after number 1.

Take some time off

Even the President of the United States takes a holiday every now and again. If they can find time, so can you. If work is pressuring you to work 24/7, it’s time to put your foot down. You are legally entitled to time off work. Even if you are too busy at the moment, you can start making plans for a couple of months time. Doing so will give your work plenty of notice, and give you more time to save and plan. Go with friends or family if you want too. But don’t be afraid to go alone. Find destinations that are friendly and accommodating to single travellers. Rent an apartment in a small Italian town, for example. Spend your days snoozing, exploring, eating and reading. You’ll recharge your batteries massive amounts. When you do return home, you’ll be far more equipped to deal with life.

See a counselor

Don’t ever let yourself get bogged down by what other people say about Therapists . Good reviews and bad reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt. This is because each person is different, and, as a result, will react differently to what the counsellor in question has to offer. However, you should 100% try it out for yourself. Counselors have professional training in helping people deal with their problems. Whether you’re suffering from stress, anxiety or challenges at work or in your relationship, they can help.

Learn how to say no.

This is just the same as telling your boss ‘no’ when he requests you work overtime. You also need to learn to say no in other areas of your life. If your food arrives in a restaurant and is cold, say ‘no, this is cold’. If your friend is constantly letting you down on plans and arrangements, say ‘no, this isn’t acceptable.’

If you let other people walk all over you, they will do. If you want to look after number one, you have to show that you are a strong person who won’t allow poor standards.

Exercise

Exercising isn’t all about getting a body to make the ladies swoon. It’s also about feeling better inside. Working out a few times a week will you give more energy. It will help you sleep better. It will give you more stamina- at work and, ahem, elsewhere. And, if it boosts your self-confidence at the same time, bonus!

Mix cardio with weight training for the best results. Away from the gym, find other ways to exercise from day to day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Run home from work in the evenings instead of driving. While small changes, they can make a big difference.
